I’m a pediatric OT, and today a child-led “practice pour” with a dry scalp plus a 10-count and mirror reduced one 4-year-old’s bath-time tears, and I’m hoping to collect family-friendly ideas to help parents carry it over at home. What small tweaks — like a visor, a favorite washcloth, or a song — have stuck for your kids?
We had luck giving our 4-year-old a $2 condiment squeeze bottle and letting them do a slow “practice pour” first, then a real pour while I count to 10 and keep a dry washcloth on their forehead as a “shield.” The tiny stream means no surprise gush, and I tilt their chin up to watch in the mirror like you did, which cut protests fast. @OP, if control still spikes anxiety, start with just “watering the duck” for one count and build to a 10-count over a week.
Swim goggles + ‘chin to chest’ during the 10-count cut my kid’s tears; a wind-up toy race ends the rinse.
A fun bath toy can really help distract, too! Have you ever tried a small bath book or toy boat? It could make bath time easier.
