On a home visit last Tuesday, a dim hallway after 6 pm and a curling entry mat were the biggest trip risks I saw. I’ve had good results swapping the “dim hallway after 6 pm” for plug-in dusk-to-dawn or motion nightlights at knee height so the path and floor edges pop, usually under $10 each. Would the person tolerate a warm 2700K light, or do they prefer steady over motion; either way, placing them at the top and bottom of that hallway is a quick, low-cost start.
Lighting’s key, but I’d tackle the “curling entry mat” first: remove it or swap to a low-profile rubber-backed mat, or secure edges with carpet tape plus a beveled threshold strip so toes don’t catch. For that dim-after-6 pm stretch, set lights to kick on before dusk if timers are handy. @emersonW30, got a go-to mat that stays flat with wet boots?
And that “dim hallway”: add high-contrast tape on thresholds/first–last stair edges; under $10. CDC: STEADI - Older Adult Fall Prevention | STEADI - Older Adult Fall Prevention | CDC.
